What they are

What custom orthotics are

Custom orthotics are prescription devices designed around your clinical assessment, your foot shape, your activity and your footwear.

Each pair is made from a non weight bearing 3D digital scan of each foot. The orthotics are fabricated by Evolve Orthotics Laboratory, whose team includes a pedorthist.

The assessment includes a foot and lower limb exam and a gait and posture analysis. Orthotics are recommended only when the assessment shows they are appropriate.

When to ask

When to ask about custom orthotics

Ask about custom orthotics when your feet are part of what is bothering you. These are the most common reasons people in Sandy Hill and near uOttawa ask.

Foot or heel discomfort

Recurring foot or heel discomfort, especially with walking, standing or activity.

Tired feet

Tired feet after long days on your feet at work, commuting or on campus.

Pressure in your shoes

Pressure or overloaded areas inside your shoes.

Movement and alignment

Movement and alignment concerns, as part of a broader care plan.

Not everyone needs orthotics. They are recommended case by case, only when the assessment shows they are appropriate.

How it works

How getting custom orthotics works

Custom orthotics take three visits: an assessment and scan, a fitting about 2 to 3 weeks later, and a follow up 4 to 6 weeks after that.

Assessment and scan, 45 minutes

History, foot and lower limb exam, gait and posture analysis and, when appropriate, a 3D scan. Your orthotics are then ordered from the lab.

Fitting, about 2 to 3 weeks later

Your orthotics are delivered, the fit is checked, and you receive wear and break in instructions.

Follow up, 4 to 6 weeks later

The follow up is included, along with adjustments to your orthotics within 60 days of your fitting.

Insurance

Check your insurance before you book

Call your insurer before booking. Each plan has its own rules for custom orthotics, and coverage varies by plan and is not guaranteed.

Ask your insurer

  • Does my plan require a prescription for custom orthotics?
  • Who can prescribe and dispense orthotics under my plan?
  • Is pre approval required?

If you need a prescription

Get it from your family doctor before your visit. It must include a diagnosis, not just a symptom, and be dated before your scan. Insurers will not cover orthotics if the scan is done before the prescription date.

What you receive

At your fitting you receive an itemized receipt plus the documents insurers typically ask for: assessment summary, scan method and lab invoice. You submit them to your plan yourself.

International students

UHIP generally covers medical services only, so check your student union health plan for orthotic coverage.
